Hello all.
I have a date for a pre-op assessment on the 9th Sept.
It is for a debridement and synovectomy of my left knee. Really, I need a replacement but we have to try this approach first apparently!
Any ideas what I need to say? what will be asked? What will happen?

Hi jenni, Good news that you've had your date for pre-op assessment! Ive had a couple and basically they ask loads of questions about your medication, health, allergies etc. They go through a checklist of illnesses family history whether you have dentures, contacts any other false bits.. They check bp,height, weight and talk you through the operation and answer any questions you have. Good luck and pleased you've had a date for CT scan. Love Ceri xx

Hi Jenni,
I had my pre-op the same day as I saw the surgeon but I haven't got a date for the op yet. They do everything that Ceri said. If you are over 45 they do an ECG but you won't need that! With me they wanted blood tests but I was due to have them the following week anyway so they said they would use those. For RA they asked if my neck was involved, for the GA, so mention it if yours is affected. Good luck with it, hope you don't have to wait too long for the op.

I am so glad to hear you have a date for your pre-op assessment. As everyone else has said they will ask you lots of questions about your medical history, medication, mobility etc. They will want to know what sort of help you will have when you go home. They will do blood tests and a mrsa test. They will tell you about what happens in the first 12 hours after the operation and how they will get you mobilised. What equipment you may need to use to walk etc.
You need to ask if you are having it done under a general or by epidural if you don't already know (sometimes you get the choice). What pain management there will be. They will tell you about physio's visiting to help you get mobile. You should ask what medication you can take on the day of the operation. As Doreen says remember to say whether you have trouble with your neck for a General Anaesthetic. They administer the GA in a different way if you do have problems. I found that my jaw felt as if it was out of joint for several weeks after my GA and they said it was because of the RA.
In my hospital they categorise patients according to their current health and then they have to follow a strict regime of tests according to the category. I was classed as Major and had the whole ream of tests.
I was basically told that if you think you are coming into hospital for a rest - think again. They are very keen after knee surgery to get you mobile as quickly as possible to avoid DVT's.
9th September seems a long way away but it will be here before you know it.
Take care
Jackie xx

I think it's usually about 6 weeks because if it's any longer than that then all the tests have to be repeated. That's what happened to me anyway. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

You should not have to wait that long after the pre-op. Mine have always been done the week before I am admitted. Otherwise, as has already been said they will need to re-do all the tests before you go in if you have to wait too long.

Hi Jenni
Just caught up with this thread. When my Dad had his pre-op assessment he was asked if he was willing to go in at short notice if there was a cancellation. He could and did as he is retired and Mum could drive him in. It might not be possible for you if you have to think about child care for Bernie.
